Many of the facilities at the Grand Canyon are historic and were built before current accessibility standards were set; however, many of the buildings that do not meet current standards are accessible with assistance. A copy of the Grand Canyon National Park Accessibility Guide is available upon request at Canyon View Center, Yavapai Observation Station, Kolb Studio, Tusayan Museum and Desert View Information Center. The terrain at the Grand Canyon is rugged with narrow, rocky trails and steep cliffs. Visitors using wheelchairs or who have visual impairments often need assistance. Protective walls and curbs are intermittent. Several of the daily interpretive Ranger Programs are wheelchair accessible. Look in The Guide (the park newspaper handed out at the Entrance Gate) for specifics. The Golden Access Passport, available at the South Rim and Desert View entrance stations, waives entrance fees for permanently disabled individuals who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. This passport allows a 50 percent discount in most federally operated campgrounds. The National Park Service provides wheelchairs for temporary day use by park visitors. No rental fee is charged. A wheelchair is usually available at the Visitor Center at Canyon View Information Plaza. For visitors needing mobility assistance between the Mather Point parking lot and the Canyon View Visitor Center, there is a 15 minute round trip shuttle bus service. The shuttle operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. - buses run about every 15 minutes from a half hour before opening to a half hour after closing of the Visitor Center at Canyon View Information Plaza and Books and More Store. An on-call Paratransit Service is available for visitors needing mobility assistance who plan to arrive either without their own transportation or who are not part of a guided tour. Accessible shuttle buses are available in response to requests made the day prior. Call 928-638-0591 to make a reservation. An accessibility permit is available at entrance gates, the visitor center at Canyon View Information Plaza, Yavapai Observation Station, Kolb Studio, El Tovar concierge desk and the Bright Angel Lodge transportation desk. The permit allows access to some areas closed to general public traffic. Guided bus tours within the park on the South Rim are conducted by Grand Canyon National Park Lodges (a park concessioner); wheelchair-accessible tours are available by prior arrangement. Call (928) 638-2631 for information. TDD phones are available to hotel guests in the park. Your RV is waiting for you...click here to Rent An RV Now!
